Christo I. Tchervenkov, M.D., C.M., FRCSC, FACS

Dr. Christo I. Tchervenkov was born in Yambol, Bulgaria on July 19, 1953. During the events leading to the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union, his family left for Canada on August 7, 1968.

 He obtained his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal in 1978 and was the Class President. Following a residency in General Surgery and Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at McGill University, he was Chief Resident ofPediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Boston Children’s Hospital under Aldo R. Castañeda in 1986.

He returned to McGill University in 1987, where he has been the Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Montreal Children’s Hospital since 1991 and a senior surgeon at the Royal Victoria and Montreal General Hospitals. He holds the Tony Dobell Chair in Pediatric Surgery and is a Tenured Professor of Surgery at McGill University.

 Dr. Tchervenkov isthe Executive Director and Founding President of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, established in 2006. He is a past President of the Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery “Aldo R. Castañeda”. He is also the Founding Vice-President and Secretary, and Immediate Past President of the International Society for Nomenclature ofPaediatricand Congenital Heart Disease that has established the International Paediatric and Congenital Cardiac Code (IPCCC). Dr. Tchervenkov has been a tireless organizer of pediatric and congenital heart surgery and partner specialties on a global level.
