A native of Greece, Dr. Sarris graduated summa cum laude from Athens College and subsequently studied Biochemical Sciences at Harvard College, USA, graduating with Honors. He studied medicine at Harvard Medical School and the prestigious inter-university Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Program in Health Sciences and Technology, graduating with Honors from Harvard Medical School in Boston.
He interned in Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard University Teaching Hospital, and completed General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery training at Stanford University, California, USA. There, he also became Carl and Leah McConnel Cardiovascular Research Fellow, as well as Fellow in Cardiopulmonary Transplantation underNorman E. Shumway, the world recognized father of cardiopulmonary transplantation.
Dr. Sarris completed the Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, USA, where he also served as Instructor in Cardiothoracic Surgery.Subsequently, hejoined the Staff of the Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, headed by Roger Mee, and was responsible for the Pediatric Heart, Lung, and Combined Heart and Lung Transplantation Program.
He returned to Greece in 1997, and introduced complex congenital heart surgery to his country. He established and run two pediatric heart surgery units, at the Onassis Center and at Mitera Hospital, before moving to Iaso Children’s Hospital, where he organized and directs a state-of-the-art Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery Department. He heads the Athens Heart Surgery Institute and the leading congenital heart surgery team in Athens, performing the full spectrum of complex pediatric and adult congenital heart operations, with referrals from around the world.
Dr. Sarris has served on the Congenital Committee and the Guidelines Committee of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, and he currently serves on the Council of the Association for European Pediatric and Congenital Cardiology. He is Secretary General and Research Committee Chair of the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association, as well as Co-Chair of the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association Database.A Founding Member and former Governing Council Member of the World Society of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, he currently co-chairs its Research Committee. A Member of the American Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeryand other majorinternational scientific societies in the field, he has also served as President of the Working Group for Congenital Heart Surgery of the Hellenic Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeonsfor many years. With an experience of many thousand operations, and authorship of multiple publications in peer reviewed scientific journals, Dr. Sarris has been an invited lecturer in many scientific meetings around the world. His academic interests includeneonatal heart surgery, TGA, Tetralogy, surgery for the single ventricle, and ECMO, as well as the introduction of new technologies, such as 3D printing in complex congenital cardiac operations.
