Dr. Krishna Iyer is one of India’s top paediatric cardiac surgeons, recognised for his clinical expertise and wide ranging involvement with cardiac care for children in India and other developing nations.
Dr. Iyer completed his M.B.B.S, M.S. and M.Ch. (Postgraduate examination in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery) from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Post his education, he joined the cardiac surgery department of AIIMS and was Additional Professor at AIIMS before moving to Escorts Heart Institute in 1995 to set up its pediatric cardiac care division. He trained in pediatric and infant cardiac surgery under the guidance of the renowned pediatric cardiac surgeon – Dr. Roger Mee – as Senior Fellow at the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne in Australia. Since his return he has endeavored to popularize the specialty of pediatric and congenital heart surgery in India
Dr. Iyer began the first dedicated paediatric cardiac care program in North India at Escorts Heart Institute Research Centre (now Fortis-Escorts Heart Institute) in 1995. Under his guidance, this pediatric cardiac program has become the benchmark for cardiac care for children in India and its South East Asian neighbours. The department caters not only to children from all parts of India but also to International patients from over 15 countries. Dr. Iyer has operated on more than 14,000 babies, children and adults with congenital heart diseases, specializing in various procedures such as the arterial switch procedure, double switch operation, TAPVC repairs, Fontan procedure and its modifications, corrections for tetralogy of Fallot, DORV, Truncus, Senning operation, conduit repairs and wide range of one stage and multi-stage corrections for complex congenital heart diseases. He has performed original work on rapid two-stage arterial switch procedures and worked on the first successful rapid two stage arterial switch and double-switch operation in India.
