Michel N. Ilbawi, M.D.

Michel N. Ilbawi, M.D., who is the director of pediatric cardiac surgery at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois.  He is widely regarded as a world-class pediatric cardiovascular-thoracic surgeon, and brings more than 30+ years of experience to Advocate Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Ilbawi completed his residency in general surgery at the American University of Beirut Hospital, cardiothoracic surgery at Case Western University, and pediatric cardiac surgery at Northwestern University.  He was a fellow and later an attending physician at Children’s Memorial Hospital.  He is also director of pediatric cardiac surgery in many Chicago medical centers.

Dr. Ilbawi has appeared on Chicago magazine’s list of Top Doctors of Metro Chicago, America’s Best Doctors and America’s Best Surgeons since 2001.   Board certified in general, cardiothoracic and congenital heart surgery, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Association of Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics, among many other prestigious medical societies.

Dr. Ilbawi has published extensively in his field, and has presented widely in the United States and abroad.  He pioneered many operations and procedures in his field and has contributed several new approaches to the surgical management of congenital heart disease.  Including an operation named after him for management of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries, a very complex and serious heart condition.  He is actively involved in cutting edge clinical research that may provide solutions to difficult heart diseases in children.
