Thomas L. Spray, M.D.

Dr. Spray is the Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Alice Langdon Warner Endowed Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Director of the hospital’s Thoracic Organ Transplantation Program. He is also Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Spray received his medical degree and training in General and Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine and specialty training in Cardiac Pathology at the National Institutes of Health before joining the staff of Washington University, St. Louis where he rose to become Professor and Chief of the Section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital. He joined the staff at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1994.

Dr. Spray is a member of the major international societies in cardiothoracic surgery, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (of which he is a Past President), The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, The European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and The American Surgical Association. He is the author of over 270 peer-reviewed articles and over 60 book chapters, in addition to editing three major cardiothoracic surgical textbooks. Dr. Spray is an internationally recognized expert in the provision of surgical treatment of congenital heart disease for the full range of infants, children and adults with congenital cardiothoracic disorders.
